Winter destinations...

We are going to a couple different places this year for our winter holiday. I thought we would try going a bit further east on the Florida Panhandle for a change, but still not make that turn south. So our first stop is to be The Carabelle Beach RV Resort in (imagine this) Carrabelle Beach. Just east of Apalachicola and in a area we have been told has great seafood. Spending a month there. I think we'll also hit Topsail and maybe a new RV park near Topsail called Live Oak Landing. It's owned by the same people that own the Carrablle Beach park. Looks nice. Then we are planning on starting our way up the eastern seaboard to DC. The TRVN Spring rally is in the DC area, so it should be fun. Should be lots to see and do by late March. Not planning to go to Red Bay unless something happens to force us to go there. I would like to go to Bay Dieseel for our annual service, but then again, it's not worth going that way just for that.
If anything changes, I'll make a update. Oh, hate not to go to Bella Terra, may just stop there on the way down.

End of fall and plans for the winter.

Well, we had a great last couple of trip to end our RVing season for 2010. First we went to a small campground right on the Mississippi, across the river from Red Wing, MN. It was quite nice if a bit small, but the water was good, power pedestals were new and easy to get hookup to. No sewer because it is on a flood plain, but that wasn't a issue and they do have a pumper and dump station on site if you were staying longer. We were only about 12-15 feet from the water and it was great fun to watch the commerical river traffic and the recreational traffic as well. Some nice boats out there... I would suggest you read the history. The area has quite a checkered past and is quite interesting to read about.

After that, we drove to Apple Valley, MN and stayed at the Lebanon Hills CG. Really nice large sites and right in the city close to everything in the metro area. Spend 5 days there getting caught up on Dr visits etc in the city, some shopping etc. Then it was off to the Grand Casino RV Park in Hinckley. We went there for two reasons. It is near home and a good place to stop to get things settled and cleaned before going home and also to attend event. This time we saw Chef Taylor Forence and a week later saw Alan Jackson. Both ere good fun but AJ is really a great act to watch and listen to. We just left the RV there between events and went home to take care of some business, Mary went to Toronto on business, between events as well. Had a lot of rain that week and there was plently of flooding the SE part on MN and SW part of WI once again.

Last trip was to our Wisconsin Allegro club Rally in Wausau. Had a great time with our fellow Allegro owners and were hosted by Kings Campers. Nice fish dinner on Friday evening and a chili dump on Saturday even followed by some fellowship with the other memebers. We left our RV at Kings to have some minor service completed and they will store it for us until we head south.

Sorry I have been so slow in making updates. We have been to Duluth, Two harbors, Brainerd, Red Wing, Apple Vally and hinckley in our RV. I got to meet lots of other pups, had boat rides, lots of stuff. Mama and papa hosted two RV rallys which they liked. First the Wisconsin Allegro Group and the the TRVN group. First was in Duluth out on the water. Lots of fun stuff to see and bark at. I met some old puppy friends again, got lots of fun stuff to eat and put my feet in Lake Superior. Didn't go swiming though, water was to cold..burrrrrr. Then we went to Two Harbors to relax a bit, but Papa didn't like driving through something called a construction zone. He was nervous and the road was small... It was cold as well. And I got rained on, don't like that. Then we went to the Brainerd TRVN (??) Rally and a nice place. A small lake I could play in a bit and ducks to bark at...Really nice thick grass to play on. It was fun. Then we went home again for a few weeks.

We finally had a TRVN get together in 2010. 7 coaches got together at the RV Resort Village. We had a nice few days with lots of new friends being made. More details can be read on TRVN. search for my posts. Here are some photos:

August RVing adventures Duluth.

We spent another 10 days or so, out and about in Duluth and the Brainerd lakes area. In Duluth we hosted the WAW Allegro club at the lakehead Boat Basin. Very interesting spot to stay a few days. Right on the water, well, the harbor side of Minnesota Point. Just a short drive over the lift bridge. Gives wonderful views of the bridge and all the incoming and outgoing boat traffic. Our group had a good Friday evening meal at Grandmas. Everyone got to spend some time touring the area and some even took the steam engine ride up to Two Harbors. We had a couple days with heavy fog in the mornings, but other than that and some overnight rain, the weather was good. We cooked burgers and brats and everyone else brought something to share. We'll be doing it again next year,just have to sort out where. I'm thinking of somewhere along the Mississippi. Have to check it out.

Well, we had a great couple weeks out in the motorhome. We spent a long weekend in the NE Wisconsin area previously mentioned. Nice meeting up with the Wisconsin Allegro Waunderers. Can't say much about the park we were at, it was the most expensive park we had ever been in - anywhere in the country. It wasn't even close to being worth it. Had to haul garbage for a mile, no lighting, I could go on...But just check out RV park reviews.

Then we drove back to Shakopee to spend a week in the cities. Catching up on some Dr visits etc. Still really like that park at Mystic Lake. Clean and well kept.

Stopped at Grand Casino Hinckley on the way home. Mary won a bit of cash, which always is nice.

Now we are getting ready for our WAW rally at Lakehead boat basin in Duluth. Followed by the TRVN Rally in Brainerd. Busy for us since we are the wagonmasters for both meets. It's been very hot and wet here at home, but the garden is growing great. Water on the river is really highj. So high, that I had to take the windshield off the boat in order to get it off the lift. Now it's raining at a rate a .7" per hour. Good news is that the motorhome is staying dry inside...Might float away, but will not leak anyway..

Also, have mostly gotten the bathroom remodel finished. Whew...Didn't like that job at all. It would be a cold day in you know where before I did that again.

Bebe is still her wonderful little self. What a sweet little girl..We were so lucky to have her join our little family.

Gettin Itchy

We have been home for two months and have about had enough of the stationary lifestyle. Heading out to NE Wisconsin for a Allegro Club Rally just after the 4Th. Should be fun. Then going to Minneapolis for a week before returning home. It was a good time to be home though, got lots of stuff updated on the motorhome and some minor maintance completed. Got the yard sorted out so it doesn't look like a desert anymore, the garden planted, a watering system working etc..
Mary has been in the UK and Qatar for business, gathering up frequent flyer miles for our next trip to New Zealand. Now she'll be home for a while.
Build a elevated garden in a effort to get some better soil from growing tomatoes etc. The ground here contains to much sand and no significant organic matter, so it is almost impossible to get anything other than weeds to grow. This worked out quite well. Have a bit of landscaping to finish and get some grass reestablished, but that'll come with a bit of time. Photo attached.

Already starting to plan our winter 2011 getaway. We were going to go to New Mexico, but have since decided to go back to the Florida Panhandle and Alabama. We really like it there and have gotten used to the lifestyle and knnow the country well. It does seem like a second home when we are there.

Well, we had a great time in Gulf shores. Caught up with many friends, especally JB & Bev and Fred and Judy. RVing really is fun. We had great food, lots of fun and our dogs all got along good. That really is fun, The pups are great to have around and we all take a interest in them. It's quite amazing. BeBe has grown up into a wonderful little friend, spoiled as possible, but who's fault is that? hah

After Gulf Shores we went to Bay St. Louis, MS for a couple of days. Mary got to play some games for fun and I got to go to the buffet for lunch. Went for a long ride along the coast road and saw much devastation from katrina still present. I'm not sure I understand why things are not being rebuilt. maybe lack of Insurance. Very sad that area should be a popular as Florida, beautufl beaches, etc. But no places to eat, pubs nothing to draw anyone to the aera. I'm not even sure if there was anything there before Kartina. Not a lot that's for sure. Attached a few pics for you viewing. Met up with friends Fred and Judy there, spent some quality time.. great folks.

Then we went to, where else, Red Bay to have a bit of work done on our motorhome. Nothing serious. We were to have front end protection film added, but couldn't get it done due to time. We did add power shades in the front end. Best thing we could have done. They are great. no more curtains. Had that done at Tiffin. Couldn't get brannon H. to respond at all. Done with him, if you can't do something, just tell me, do not ignore me. Very dispeased with him ands will not go back. No reason to.
Having it done by Tiffin, we have some warranty and someone to fall back on.
We did have the M2 service done on the engine and chassis at Bay Diesel in Red Bay. Very good service and reasonably priced.
Headed home from there, about a 1000 mile drive. Spent on night on route in south ILL at a very nice spot called Wittington woods. The drive between there and madison, WI waas pure he*l, it was so windy we had to stop a number of times since we felt like we were going to get blown off the road. Stopped at a KOA just past madison. Itr was ok, nothing more. A typical KOA, clean and well kept, but a bit expensive. Made it home the next day. trip went with no problems other than a dead toad battery.

Gulf Shores area info

Hi all;
Mary and I have been in the Gulf Shores general area now for almost 6 weeks, so I thought I make a few comments about things to do in the area. I know quite a few of you are likely familiar with the area, so you can add additonal comments or just ignore. I don’t profess to be any expert, just relating our experiences.

In no particular order:

FYI, I am assuming most folks know about Battleship Park in Mobile and the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.

So;

Pirates Cove:
Great place for a pizza or cheeseburger. Right on the water (Wolf Bay). Boats can beach or moor up right at the place. Go across the intercoastal waterway bridge and up to county 20. See web site for further info. Oh, live music starting midafternoon on weekends. If you don’t like dogs, don’t go. They are everywhere, people bring them and they just run free. Very entertaining place. Link below:
Abandon Hope all Ye who enter

Cohiba Dunes Wine and cigar bar.
Located up 59 in the same shopping center as Target. Monday and Thursdays are $2.00 wine nights. All night, not 4 to 6 or some such time. Seems to include some premium tap beer as well. Beautiful surroundings, very nice seating, live music. Yes, smoking is allowed, but their extraction system is state of the art and smoke is barely noticeable. Oh, a walk in humidor to select your cigar, and a good selection of scotch as well as most all other libations. No food, none, nada, zero, not even a bag of chips. So factor that in if you are thinking about going. Amazingly reasonable on those two nights. Highly recommended.

Some shrimp on the barbie? Try Blaylock Seafood.
Not a restaurant, just fresh seafood, wine, oils etc. Was recommended to us by a local and it lives up to what we were told. Left side of 59 just before the Intercoastal waterway bridge if heading north. There are lots of seafood places around, can’t say about any others, other than as noted below. Nice selection of wines, very different than whats at the local Walmart.

Joe Patti’s
Another option for a seafood market is Joe Patti’s in Pensacola. It’s huge and must have everything known to man – seafood & fishwise. A bit of a drive, but not really all that far. Take 182 (Perdido Key Road) all the way and see the entire waterfront area at the same time. Nice drive.

How about a beautiful Drive?
Here’s one: Take 59 north to 98, go left on 98 until it splits into 98 and scenic 98. Just follow it down to Mobile Bay. It winds its way up along the Bay until Fairhope, maybe further; we didn’t go beyond that point. There is a nice place to stop called Punta Clara Kitchen (lunch and pecan treats) in Point Clear and a Marriot Grand Hotel and Golf Resort right on the water that’s worth a walk around.

If you go off to Visit the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, a good stop after for lunch or dinner is McGuire’s Irish Pub in Pensacola. Basically right downtown. They also have have an location in Destin in case you to want a longer drive.

There is always the outlet mall on 59 North. The only thing of interest to me was what appeared to be a Home Depot tool store. Not called that, but only had brands they sell. Power tools, outdoors stuff. Your mileage will vary.

Tin Top Restaurant and Oyster Bar.
Wonderful spot for a dinner, or what we do is just go and sit at the bar and eat our fill of fresh oysters. Tends to be busy for dinner seating in the restaurant, so don’t be in a hurry. To the left off 59 on CR 10. In Bon Secour.

Lulu’s.
Apparently this place is owned by Jimmy Buffet’s sister. Have not been there yet, but it always appears packed on weekends anyway. On your right on the intercoastal as you go over the hwy 59 bridge north bound. Look down and there it is. We plan on checking it out this weekend.

Camping goodies.
A bit further up 59 on the right side is a Coleman Outlet store. All the stuff they are known for including their grills, lanterns and accessories for them.
There is a Camping World up 59 maybe 12-14 miles or so if you need anything. Seems to be about the only option in the area other than wally world. Opps, there is a Tiffin dealer in Pensacola we visited last year that had a good selection of accessories etc. About a 28 mile drive from Gulf Shores.
Carpenter’s Campers

Avoid (our opinion)
CiCi’s Pizza. The worst of everything food related in one place. Free would be to expensive.
O’Charly’s. Didn’t get far enough to try the food, service was terrible. We just left.

An FYI;
Highway 59 Expressway. The Toll is just for the bridge, you can drive it all the way from the north start to just before the bridge then turn off at Country road 8 (or any intersection with a light) over to regular 59. The Bella Terra intersection is (look to the right) about the last one before it turns a bit east and becomes more difficult to get off. If you do cross it, it puts you on the same road that goes to Island Retreat, 180, but it has a few tight turns. Cars are $3.50 both ways.

Still at Bella Terra in Foley, AL

We have been here a month so far with not quite two weeks to go. It has been wonderful. By far the nicest park we have been to in our journeys to date. The staff are great, very helpful and always friendly. They make a real effort to have activities for everyone. The place is clean as a whistle and well, I could just go on...A few more photos to follow.

The general area of Gulf Shores and surrounding cities, is great to visit. We really like it and will be returning many times in the future.

At Bella terra

After leaving Topsail, we headed to bella Terra RV Resort in Foley, AL. Actually is right next to Gulf Shores on the Gulf or Mexico. Only about a 5 mile drive to the beaches. We had alwaays heard about this Park and wanted to see it and find out if staying at these types of parks are worth it. So, it is a very nice RV Park, the landscaping, while immature will be great in a few years. The clubhouse, pool entrance and exits are very well done. The staff is very helpful, always friendly, etc. Plus, everything works, the WIFI, cable TV, power and water hookups and the like are in perfect working order. About half the final plan is completed and I'm told that it is over 90% sold out. The sites are very big, with limited landscaping included. Many folks have added cabanas, outdoor kitchens, signifinact landscaping upgrades and the like. The premium lots are on the water and of course cost more to buy or rent.
My only critisum would be that at a minimum a picnic table or outdoor seating of some sort should be included. If we come again, I wouldn't accept a lot without that.
That said, out stay was very reasonably priced and I doubt we could have found a better value anywhere in the southeast.
I would encourage anyone to check it out.

The Gulf Shores area of Alabama is wonderful, the beaches are beautiful, very accessable and the entire area is freindly and very well kept. Lots of places to spend money, eat and just visit or go sightseeing.

2010 winter trip started

So, it was the end of Feb and we had enough winter. We did get some snowmobiling in and had a great time of it. But, warmth will be nice. So we loaded up the Jeep and headed off to Knoxville to pick up the motorhome. From there we headed to Birimgham, AL to de-winterize and get everything settled. That done, we headed to one of our favorite destinations, Topsail State Park near Destin, FL. We arrived on on a cold, overcast day, that was just plain nasty. We had needed the heat on in Alabama, but thought that would pass as we got further south. Nope. But, by the weekend we has turned very nice, still cool mornings but the afternoons are beautiful. Topsail is still a great place to stop, we have a wonderful site with tons of room. BeBe is having a wonderful time meeting new dogs and exploring everywhere. It’s her first birthday, so she can get even more spoiled. See pics. Tomorrow we head off to Bella Terra, only about a 90 mile drive so we can take our time and enjoy the sights.
FYI, we had a great site at Topsail, a few photos aare attched. Enjoy.

2010, off we go, enough winter!

Ok, lousy winter so far, not enough snow for fun sledding, so enough. Time to get ready to head south. Plans this year are to head to Knoxville to pick up Cecilia and then go to Topsail for a week, then head to Gulf shores until we start heading back north in May. Ok, a stop in Red Bay in between to get our front end refinished and the Diamond shield installed. made a smart choice leaving the motorhome in Knoxville. Tennessee RV has been very good about taking care of it for us and their pricing is reasonable. A weeks notice and it'll be ready to pick up.

The rest of the fall trip - Ill, Kentucky & Tennessee

So, off we went from Bailey's Grove headed to Champaign, Ill. Planned on overnighting there, but ended up staying two nights so Mary could get some important work completed. Also had a terrible drive down there due to road construction, poor roads, etc. Needed some rest!
Nice park and Nice folks at the DW Lake Campground. Would have been very nice had it not rained all day, every day.
On Wednesday we headed off to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Nice drive, all expressways. Really a nice RV park, no sewer hookups, but we surived just frine. Rained most of the 5 days until the day we left. While Mary was working, I went on part of the Burbon tour to Woodford Reserve Distillery. Beautiful place, old quaint and moderrn all at once. Finally we got to visit the horse park. Wow, very worth a persons time. Even if you are not a horse person, just seeing all the history and learning about how the horse became such a part of America was interesting. Highly recommended. They have 29 miles of white fence in the horse park. Vey well kept and , well, fun to see. The countryside in the Lexington area was also worth a good drive.
Oh, don't go there and expect any sleep on a fall football weekend...Fun, noisy, but not rude.

Next was the trip to Tellico Plains, TN and the Tiffin RV Network Rally. Woww, 50 coaches showed up. This was really fun, meeting people we met in Beverly Beach in the spring, making some new friends, learning more about our motorhomes, lots of great food and more. I know now why the FMCA Rally was such a downer. This was really well done and fun. Can't wait for the spring Rally in Gulf Shores, apparently we're up to 75 coaches already there.
The Tellico Plains area was also beautiful. It is the start of what is called the Cherola Skyway. A very senic, twisty drive up in the mountains, a number of very beautiful vista etc. Fun to drive as well. Went up on the modern road, but came back on a ORV trail (why have a Jeep and not use it capabilties?)for about twice as far, but really beautifull. Followed the Tellico River all the way, see a couple pics for a taste. And one of Bebe after a meal of grass.. Dog or mini horse??

Finally left Tellico Plains and headed back to Knoxville to drop off Cecialia and head back home in the Jeep. All done with no problem, about 18 hours driving time after leaving Tennessee RV. Stayed a night just south of Chicago and made it home Sunday afternoon about 4 PM.

Door County

Had a great time up on the Door County penisula. Excellent fall colors, very charming little villages and shops. Lots to do and see without driving very far from the campground. We stayed at Baileys Grove CG in Baileys Harbor. It's on the Lake Michigan side. Very nice CG, friendly hosts and well kept up. We had our Allegro Club meet and greet on friday night for a local fish fry and a chili dump on saturday after the club meeting. That was something new to me, everyone brought their favorite homemade chili and it all got dumped in a pot and heated together, excellent idea.

Monday we drove to Champaign, Ill and are spending a couple nights there before moving on to the kentucky horse park on Wednesday. We have kept warm with no problem in the motorhome and no issues with frozen water. Not very cold yet though.

Fish Fry Tour, Part Duex

Been at home base for three weeks now, must be time to get outa Dodge again. So, off we go; first to Wausau to pick up the motorhome from Kings. A few repairs completed. Really a great shop with good people and very customer oriented. After that we are off to Door County for a long weekend with the Wis Allegro club. Friday fish fry, Chili pot luck and other activities.

I had always wanted to check this place out. It's right on water on the harbor side of Minnesota Point in Duluth. Really neat, yes you are parked in a parking lot, but it's on Lake Superior. Wow. We choose a full hook up site, but in hindsight, I would have choosen a water/power site. They have the best view of the water, lift bridge and Duluth. Sort of face NW as opposed to SW for the full hookups. You can watch the bridge going up and down, boats coming and going, sunsets...

From Wausau, we made our way aways NW to the Hayward area. Not a lot of choices in campgroungs so we stayed at the KOA just north of town. Actually it was very nice, we had a premium spot with a patio and table and chairs. Very nice actually. No tv reception and our dome didn't work nbecause of the trees, but we made do and actually enjoyed the place. It was very clean and well kept. A few photos are attached for your enjoyment. Note that our little girl puppy is really growing up.

Since our one year warranty was about to expire, I though it may be a good time to estabish our selves with Kings. Especially since we now live in Wisconsin, not MN. I then remembered there was a upcoming WAW meet at Kings. Wow, kill two birds withn one stone. Have a good time with some fellow Tiffin owners and get some work done on the coach. So, off we went friday the 11th (Minute of silence please - seriously). Had a great time with the fellow owners, a few of which we had met at the FMCA rally in Albert Lee, MN. Adam, one of kings techs spent some time with me looking at our comparment door issues. We decided that this might be a big job and it would require some body work etc. So we'd have to leave the MH there for a couple of weeks. Well, can't do that since we have plans. So they are going to document stuff so there will not be a issue getting it properly repaired in the future. I'm ok with that. End.
Friday we went out with the group to a nice fish fry at a nearby eatery. Ron G., the owner of Kings was gracious enough to attend and I ended up sitting next to him. What a impressive guy. Very proud of his city and family and his RV operation. I learned a lot about things that I would never have thought of. He also related a number of stories about Bob Tiffin. All very interesting. It was a very worthwhile evening. And just generally fun.
Saturday we had the same tech, Adam spend the morning with us answering all sorts of questions, again, a very worthwhile time. Then everyone went off to do their own thing until the evening business meeting and pot luck dinner.
All in all, it was a fun wekend with fellow Tiffin owners etc. I hope we can do it again next year. Oh, we all camped on the Kings property at no cost. Power and water were provided and a dump station was accross the street.
Since our most recent experiences with Shorewood have left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth and they have done no follow up, we are now going to look at Kings when we decide to upgrade to a Bus.

Brainerd area visit

After leaving Spicer, we headed north to the Brainerd Lakes area of central Minnesota. Very beautiful area and a highly desirable lakes area. Lots to do, many gold courses, great fishing etc. But there never has been a nice RV park. In my opinion anyway. Most of the parks are full of seasonal campers and don't show a lot of nice design features or even basic amenties. That's changing, I found about RV Resort Village at the FMCA Rally in Albert Lee. So we booked in for about a week stay in August. While there is lots of work still in process, this place is very nice and will only improve with time. We had a great site overlooking a small man made lake that is in the center of the first phase of the Class A area. A pull in site with a huge concrete pad, properly placed utilities etc. We were treated well and enjoyed every minute of our stay. It was close to many eating places, golf and of course the lakes.

We are off to Spicer, MN for the weekend and then heading up to the Brainerd area for a week. Will post updates about the new RV resort once we get there.

Did a few maintance items on the Bay prior to the trip. Replaced the shore power cord because of separation between the plug and cord outside rubber coating. Now it's water proof again. Made the old one into a extension cord. No longer storing extra cords and adapters in the main electrical bay. Things get to cramped.

Finally got the toad lights fixed. Shorewood obviously modified or messed with the cable connections since they were not as they should have been. Oh well, losing a bit of faith in their service.

A mod to our Allegro Bay

One thing that I have always felt was done "on the cheap" on our Bay is the lack of finishing of the inside of the storage bays. While in Red Bay, we saw the raw material that is used on Phaetons, etc for lining various parts. Actually looked quite simple. We found a material called Ozite that is made for that type of use at Menards. In fact I believe it is exactly the same. Mary trimmed it all out and we mounted it in place with 3M 77 spray adhesive. Looks very good and was not a difficult upgrade. Well worth the time and was a minor expense (less than 65 bucks for everything. See the photos.

Well, we spend another week at Mystic Lake's Dakotah Meadows Park. Still a nice place, but we decieded we like the lower part of the pak better. At least we found it more friendly and generally a bit nicer. Mary had work with Allina down by Abbott Hospital and I met up with my old work chums for lunch on two ocassions. Enjoyed it.

Then moved to Grand Casino RV park for a long weekend. Still a nice place, but is starting to show it's age a bit. The dry summer has taken it's toll on the grass (obviously not their fault) and It is a party park, at least on concert weekends. But that's why we came as well, so can't fault anyone for that. It quiets down as it should later and today we woke up to a beautiful blue sky. First in quite a few days. Josh Turner part of the concert was great, but Gretchen Wilson sucked the big one. Lived up to my low expectations, we and many others left. It was loud for the sake of being loud. Unlike Lynard Skinner, which was loud and fun. Only saw one other Tiffin MH, a Bus, in a sea of white gelcoat.... Parks was completely full.

Next month off to Brainerd lakes area and Spicer MN.

Dakotah Meadows RV Park @ Mystic Lake Casino

We spend a week at this park. We were very impressed overall. Very clean and well kept park. No pool, but the bathrooms and laundries were very clean. Everyone that worked there was pleasant and helpfull. They have fuel on site at better prices that elsewhere nearby. Location is almost in the Metro MSP/St Paul area. Therefore there is much shopping etc in the area. I didn't use it, but they have a fully enclosed self service car and RV wash. It would accomadate even the largest rigs. I would expect it to cosy 15-20 buck for a largish motorhome. You buy tokens, but unused ones will be refunded. Nice set up with a catwalk to reach the top etc. We are going back in early July for another week when Mary has to work in the city. The only possible downside is that your neighbor is parked right next door on a shared hookup island. We didn't find that to be a issue though.

I think it was about 28 bucks a day. Has WIFI, but no cable TV. It's so close to the city that it isn't needed, you can get all the local on air stuff easy.

FMCA Rally at Albert Lee, MN

We arrived on the first day we could, Tuesday. It then turned into a wet mess. Tons of rain turned much of the fairgrounds into a mud bog. We had to stay put until Wednesday morning when it dried up a bit But no more people were allowed to park on the grounds. They were redirected to the high school parking lot for the duration. Sort of spoiled the event for many I'd guess. We drove cart to move handicapped folks around on Thursday and Wednesday evenings. That was nice and we met many of the Badger charpter folks. Great time and great folks. Can't say the same for the rally itself. I'd have to say much of it was poorly ran. No food on the grounds or even soft drinks or coffee. The seminars were ok in about half the cases, but many were just sales pitches not educational really. Due to the weather the evening entertainment was moved into the horse barn. Ok for wenesday, but not after that. Hot, and generally unpleasant surroundings. Spend a bit and get a covered stage. I know they were concerned about weather, but....

Many folks I talked to felt the same way and especially those put out of the fairgrounds. Didn't seem like the city did much either. No listing of churhes/locations/service times or other events..

Not sure I'd attend agin. But many stated this was the exception, not the rule, so I guess we'll see.

Meet Bebe

We have a new traveling companion. Bebe the Minature Schunazer pup. What a delightful little creature. She was 10 weeks when we got her, now is just under 14 weeks. Very smart girl, but very spoiled as well of course. She has taken to life with us very well, she is a bundle of energy as expected and love to chew most anything including toes, shoes and socks. She has been very easy to train and gives us very obvious clues when she needs to go out etc. We have taken her on many tripos in the car and Jeep and she does well. She'll nap in her crate without any issues as well.

Back home...what's been happening?

A week after we got back from our trip to the Southeast, we took our Bay into Shorewood RV for some follow up warranty work and a engine, gen and chassis service. It wasn't due yet, but I thought it would be agood idea.

The windshield wipers failed again the first time I used them after having them fixed in Red Bay. Very frustrating, just a poor design in my opinion. If it happens agin, Bob T will be getting a call and some other actions will be taken. I am very displeased about this. The saving grace is that is really the only issue we have had with ethe motorhome.

We bought a new Jeep Unlimited Sahara to use as a toad on future trips. We ended up spending more on rentals while gone that we expected. That's what drove that decision. I had Shorewood put the Blue Ox baseplate on the Jeep when we went back to pick up the Bay. They also wired the Brake Buddy, failsafe, etc. We had a problem where the Jeep front tires locked in a slight right turn while driving back home. I had given Shorewood detailed instructions on how to hookup the brake buddy and they chose to ignore them and give us instruction that said to not keep the key in the car in the Acc position. Since they were the experts we followed their advice. We ended up completely ruining the two front tires. Nope I wasn't happy.

I though Shorewood should pay for the tires and any damage to the Jeep. Of course they didn't. Ended up that they did pay for the tires, installation and a 4 wheel alignment. They are also responsible for any future issues related to the front end of the Jeep. Warranty or not. I had to get tough and threaten further action, but they did agree. Bottom line: follow you owners manual and don't deviate.

Just been cleaning and waxing the motorhome getting ready for the FMCA convention in Albert Lee mid June. Can't wait to tour the Spam factory.

Signed up for the Fall TRVN Rally in tennessee in october and the next spring Rally in Alabame near Perdidio Key. That'll be fun.

Rest of the week at Red Bay

Chris Berry completed Mary's desk and installed it. Wow, it's really nice. See the pictures.

Brannon H. installed our cell phone antenna and the trick-L-start for the chassis batteries. I'm happy about that now. Should take care of the problems with batteries.

In the process he found a number of big wiring problems on our Bay,they were:

1. 250 A main fuse blown

2. Generator wiring wqrong so it needed the key to be on to start. that should not be.

3. Alternator out put was hooked up backwards so the chassis batteries didn't get the proper charge off it.

4. Aux jump didn't work because of the reversed wiring.

He fixed them all. We were to dumb to know we had a problem. we did know things worked different than others did, but didn't have enough information to understand what was happening.

Now stuff is correct.

Finally got into express service right away Thursday AM. Had the 250A fuse replaced, told the techs about the wiring issues and asked for a refund of the time Brannon charged us. That's only fair. Ended up they didn't do any paint fixes. just the fuse, checked the mid TV for bad wires, apparently were was some issue that was corrected. Again, couldn't make the BR slide malfunction. Ok well. Got out by 10, packed up and headed on out way home. Almost 6 weeks away. Had a great time and enjoyed almost every minute, met lots of nice folks, made some new friends etc. details of the fuel used, MPG etc to be added shortly.

April 19, return to Red Bay

Had a good time in Tupelo, sunday afternoon, we returned to Red Bay to get back in line for service work. As we arrived at the campground, we noticed everyone was outside talking, climbing around their coaches etc. Seems we just missed a huge hailstorm that went through about 30 minutes before we got there. It came from where we were, but we some how missed it all. Quite a bit of damage to roof vents and a lot of autos suffered hail dents. But, no one was hurt, although they were scared. we dodged another problem it seems.

Got number 295 this time. Still having issues with the bedroom slide, will try to get the paint touched up and some other stuff that didn't get finished last friday.

Well, the first part of our service/Red Bay adventure is over. We left Red Bay late friday afternoon to visit Elvis' birthplace. Although neither of us have much real interest in that. But since we have to go back to Red bay, we throught we'd go somewhere else for the weekend. Had a nice day shopping and looking around. We found a very nice RV park very near the main shopping area. See the pics.

We went on another tour of the Tiffin plant when they were working. Much more interesting to see things happening and hear all the nises of productivity. A few more pics are included. Update - April 13 at Red Bay

Well; a uneventful drive from Beverly beach to Columbus GA. Spend a few night there in Lake Pines RV park. Very quite park, friendly staff, but we felt like we were not really wanted there. No people talking or visiting about or anythging. Didn't even bother with a picture. Nothing remarkable and I doubt we'd stop there again. Saturdy we drom Columbus GA to Red bay al. We stayed in Columbes becaisue the allegro camp was full the week before Easter. We arrived late afternoon on saturday and got a site no problem. Amazing number of Tiffin coaches here for various reasons including just a visit. I went on the tour of the Tiffin factory today. Not very busy when I went, but it was the end of the shift. Advice: go to the morning tour to see things moving. Not exacly a high tech operation as far as the assembly process. It is interesting to see the raw chassis awaiting start of assembly. I think a fairly standard process of piling stuff on top of the frame. Huge amount of wiring, plumbing etc. Amazing it all works with as few problems as there is. Chris Berry is going to craft a desk for Mary for work. We may end up staying here this entire week. Put in a work order to have our rust looked at, wipers fixed and a number of other more minor things. Most should be obvious. Cannot tour the paint shop or area where they complete the frame welding etc. Right now Tiffin production is 3 coaches every day. They expect to get up to 5 a day next week. Good sign.

Interesting town. More industry than I expected (iother than Tiffin), but fair small overall.

April 4th update after the rally

We made our way from Topsail to the Tiffin RV Network at Beverly Beach Camptown. it's located on the Atlantic coast about 60 miles south of Jacksonville. Terrible drive to get there, hard rain about half the way (200 miles). First issue with the coach also showed up on the trip. Wiper problems. Made the drive interesting to say the least. But we made it. Arrived a bit late for the welcome meeting at the rally, but joined anyway and had fun. met a great group of folks, saw lots of things people had done to improve their coaches etc. Great pot luck dinner Saturday and a fire on the beach afterwards.
Thanks to all the people that brought food and shared their stories, coaches and knowledge.

We made a trip into St. Augustine (north) and down to Daytona Beach, Titisville, Coco Beach, Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. Daytona Beach was a hoot. There were car, trucks etc all over the beach. Which seemed to go on forever. Very fun to see. Lots of hotels etc. on the beach drive that looked like they were from the era when Sinatra was a young man. Very dated. Lots of them appear to have been updated and renamed as well. To say it was a touristy would be a understatement. Still fun to see. Tons of people out on the beach. You can drive all over it, but it is controlled and patrolled.

Stopped at the Space Center, but didn't go in. It was late in the day and more than a little expensive. So, I'll go back when I have a whole day to devote to it and the bus tour of the launch area etc.. Did get a few pics through. Interesting to see the general area. Drive A1A beach hughway to Daytona and saw many beautiful homes on the ocean. Not dated until you get right in town.

Staying on the beach until wedesday then starting the slow drive back home. Boo-hoooo

There are public beaches everywhere. The park deptments really make sure that the public can access the water and have use of the ocean and surrounnding areas. That said, there are many beachfront homes, condos etc. Overall it seems a bit underused and many of the condo properties seem completely empty. Maybe that is just the time of the year however. The pubs and eating places also seem slow. I would have thought that spring break would be in full swing, but apparently not yet. Destin has lots of condo development etc, everywhere, but it also seems a bit deserted. No shortage of shopping locales though. They do have a outlet mall that is very busy, much different than those in and around Minnesota.

Added photos of the beaches and a few other things we found of interest. More Navy and Air Force activity, which I like to see.

Friday, Mar 27 at Topsail State Park

On Wednesday we left Perdido Key and took a slow drive to Topsail Park about 100 miles east. Topsail is one of the highest rated RV parks in the SE. It is a state park, but is unique in the fact that it offers full hook up and cable TV. It is great. However it has been raining since late Wedesday evening. No drainage issue, just being cooped up inside is getting old. To say the least. On the good side, we're getting caught up on laundry etc. I'll add lots of photos once the sun comes out. It is really a nice place. The sites are well placed and roomy, the park is well kept as expected and there is access to a huge beach on the Gulf.

Our Bay again performed flawlessly on this short drive. Destin appears to be a tourist haven. Lots of stuff to see, lots of food outlets a huge Wally World etc... Hopefully we can get out this weekend and see it all.

Before we left Perdido Key, I went and visited the Naval Air museum in Pensacola. Wow, what a interesting collection of aircraft and great information on the history of Naval aviation. The base is the home of the Blue Angels and the planes were out getting ready for a practice session. I was able to get close enough to nab a few pictures. Attached are a few example of the aircraft on display. This is a must visit for anyone with a interest in aircraft and especially Navy aircraft. I will post a link to all the photos for those with a interest.

Update after the weekend - out exploring...

We had a great weekend out and about in the greater Pensacola area. Made the drive over to Gulf Breeze to look at the beaches and then on to Sanata Rosa Island. Lots of sand and some nice beach homes. We're impressed at how the local gov has kept public access to the beaches open. and parking available. Same with areas for fishing. The only issue would be a $1.00 charge to cross the bay bridge to Sanata Rosa Island. Not a big deal. Well, except for the 3 mile long que to get through the toll plaza. But it was saturday morning after all. Also went exploring the Oreange Beach, AL area. Very tourist friendly (read "trap") but every store known to man is there and many places to eat. A number of grocery markets so you can get most anything you would ever want. Lots of condos on the beaches (a understatement) of all types and level of fancyness. Cost seem reasonable for food etc, I'll say that.

Photos attached are all Santa Rosa Island and crossing the bridges from Pensacola proper. Figuring out tha the city is actually not that big and the biggest industry is actually the Naval Bases and related stuff.

Sunday evening the Blue Angles made a pass by us returning from a show somewhere. About 500 feet above the water and within a 1000 or so feet of us. Very impressive, all the planes in a tight formation... loud.....Apparently this coming Wednesday they are doing a practice right here. Have to see that. Maybe I can get a pic or two.

The RV park is empting out today and yesterday, maybe only 50% full at the most. We have met a number of nice folks. Two couples from MN, and MI etc.

Wednesday we head over to Topsail Hill State Park. A two hour drive. Can't wait. Sshould be a nice spot. May even extend our stay.

March 20 update

Here we are in sunny Florida on Perdido Key.

Wow, warm, sunny, no bugs. Almost couldn't be better. No issues getting here at all. A total drive of 1392 miles. As of the last fillup, we had used 115 gallons of USDL. Figures out to a amazing 11.15 MPG. Hard to believe, but that is correct, I checked and rechecked. Just under 3000 miles total on the motorhome. I am very pleased with it.

Playa Del Rio is a nice spot. Wonderfull location, maybe a bit tight, but it was no problem getting in. The Park guy helped with every move so it was easy. WIFI and cable work well.

You have to see "FLORA-Bama", what a hoot. Tourist trap, yes, but classic beach bar.

Drove 475 miles today from NW Wisconsin to central Ill, where we are getting our ECM update tomorrow. No issues at all, wonderful weather, not a cloud in the sky. Miles just merrily clicked away. Thanks Mr Tiffin. Estimated mileage is 9.8. Not bad for only having 1500 miles when we left. Looks to be a very nice Coach Care location.

Well, another fly in the ointment. 3+ inches of snow overnight and below zero temps this morning. Makes a delay in the loading etc apparent. Oh well, still to be almost 50 by friday. Should only be a minor problem.

Quick Update

Temps have been staying well above the freezing mark for a few more days. I removed the snow buildup off the front DS slide cover (which I had to open to get to the chassis batteries). We're working on a list of all the stuff we need to load up. Not a small amount of stuff. Still working out how to best deal with the winterized coach during travel until we get far enough south to be out of danger of freezing. Got some good advice off the TRVN forum and rv.net, so we'll see what ends up being done. Also got the new Direct TV receiver for the Bay. Should be interesting to set up. One final hurdle, the two feet of hard packed snow and ice and the end of the RV driveway. Hummm Hope for rain I think.

Still need the snow to go away so we can get Cecilia out of the driveway. Battery issues are now understood. I'll pull them out and have them load tested before we head off. Tiffin will pay if they need to be replaced. Everything else seems to be okeydoekey. This photo is from early in this winter. Lots more snow since then. Upper photo is recent, but prior to the last snowfall. Plan is to leave in 13 days. Stopping in Normal, IL for a ECM update.

General plan for the trip is:

March 16 leave for Pensacola from NW Wisconsin. Stop along the way at the Coach Care shop in Normal, IL. For the EMC update on our ISB. Hopefully out of there in a couple hours.

Then off for the remaining travel to Pensacola area. Planning on staying at Playa Del Rio (site 12) in Perdido Key for a week. May stop on route somewhere in northern AL, unsure where (recommendations?). Then off to Topsail (site 28) until April 1. Really looking forward to arriving at Topsail, does it really live up to all the great reviews? Hope so.

April 1, we’re off to the TRVN rally at Beverly Beach. Near St. Augustine on the Atlantic side of Florida. Should be great fun and we’ll enjoy meeting you folks that have been so helpful to us in this new adventure. Neither one of us has been to Florida before, so the whole experience should be interesting. We’ve been all over the world, but not to Florida.

Basics:
HWY 90/94/39 to Champaign IL.

HWYs 57/24 to Paducah.

HWY 24 to Nashville.

HWY 65 to Birmingham, Montgomery, etc to 29 into Pensacola.

Any suggestions or ideas as to problem areas along that route? City areas to avoid or?? Routing around them?
April 4, start the return trip. No real hard and fast plan for the return. Want to avoid Atlanta, but may look into the area northwest of Atlanta for a stop for a few days. We’ve been through there before and thought it was great, but didn’t have enough time to really see it. We should be past the worst of the cold weather by then. Want to stop at Red Bay of course, but need to look at the routing.

As noted, this our first lengthy trip in the MH, so it should be an interesting learning experience. Mary needs to work a number of days while we are gone, so hopefully that will all work out good. I think we’re all set up with the Cradlepoint router in the Bay, two different aircards etc. That’s been all tested out, set and confirmed to be working.
